Broadway Heritage £500 Art Travel Prize goes to local university student
1 April 2010
Developer of Pittville Place, Pittville Park in Cheltenham, Broadway Heritage plc, has awarded the second annual Broadway Heritage Art Travel Prize of £500 to a gifted art student at the University of Gloucestershire.
Tom Gowen is a 3rd year student in the Department of Fine Art, Painting and Drawing. He received his cheque from Nick Sargeant, Associate Dean of the University in the presence of Head of Department, Bob Davison. The bursary will fund Tom’s educational visit to Italy this Easter vacation.
On receiving his prize, Tom said: “I am delighted to be receiving this award as for this past year I’ve been developing an interest in architectural subjects and in ancient Rome in particular. I’ve been wanting to go and see the Roman ruins in the flesh, and I’m excited that now I can. I am particularly interested in the patterns created by uneven paving stones and the profile of the ruins themselves and am looking forward to the sketching and painting ahead.” Tom grew up in an artistic household, both his parents being amateur artists and knew from an early age that art would be his life.
Bob Davison is Tom’s course leader and head of department. “Tom is one of our most gifted students and our sincere thanks go to Broadway Heritage for awarding him this prize. Making a trip like this is a hugely valuable experience for any student, given them the chance to explore different contexts for their work and how it affects people. We look forward to seeing the fruits of Tom’s trip.”
Broadway Heritage’s MD Michael Hodges has an enduring interest in patronising local artists in areas where they develop homes. Artworks from the University of Gloucester are regularly on display in the lobbies of Albert House and Victoria House at Broadway’s Regency-style apartment development Pittville Place.
He said: “The talent of young people is precious and very worthwhile encouraging. We are pleased the bursary will yet again be helping to develop a talented student, and especially that Tom is interested in architecture, as indeed we are at Broadway!”
Tom is planning to take his trip during this Easter 2010 vacation.
