Broadway Heritage Art Travel Bursary awarded to mature student Timothy Russell, University of Gloucestershire

2 March 2009

Successful developer of ‘beautiful homes in stunning locations’, Broadway Heritage plc, has awarded an Art Travel Bursary to mature student Timothy Russell of the Department of Fine Art at the University of Gloucestershire.

The prize presentation was made on the steps of Broadway’s majestic Regency-style apartment building, Albert House of Pittville Place on Pittville Park in Cheltenham on Thursday 26th February.

Tom Banwell of estate agents, Knight Frank, made the presentation to Tim – for whom the Art Travel Bursary will fund an educational visit to the Lake District this Easter 2009.

Tim said in his application that if awarded the Bursary he would go to the Lake District, staying in Cockermouth or nearby, for a week. As well as attempting at least one Wainwright walk, other spots he wanted to explore were the meanders of the River Derwent and the ‘curious-looking’ Horsegrassing Plantations.

He said: “I am delighted to receive this Award because I want to continue my present interest in physical space by broadening my research into the natural environment. To date my work has looked at architectural space and I have attempted to convey the spaces created by architecture and evoked by it – and the notional experience of the space between buildings; I would like to try to extend this to the natural landscape, perhaps the spaces within and between the valleys, cwms and mountains of the Lakes.  Obviously, I feel in no small part infected by the great British landscape artists of the past.”

Bob Davison, Head of Fine Art, selected Tim to receive the prize. “Tim is a highly gifted and hard-working student. He had missed out on other opportunities in the past due to a kidney condition meaning that he needs to be near a hospital for regular dialysis. As there is an excellent hospital in the Lakes, this makes the destination really viable for him. I am looking forward to seeing some excellent art works on his return.”

Michael Hodges of Broadway Heritage plc actively promotes the work of local artists in the areas where their developments are situated. “Original works of art have something very special to offer and having the excellent Fine Art department of the University on our doorstep was too good an opportunity to miss. We already have some artworks on loan at Pittville Place and hope that perhaps we may be able to add one of Tim’s in due course. We are delighted that he is able to make this trip because of us.”

Of the 16 luxury apartments in Albert House and Victoria House, only 4 - including 2 stunning duplex apartments - remain to be leased or sold through Morgan Associates and Knight Frank. More information is available at www.pittvilleplace.com
