Pittville Place, Pittville Park, Cheltenham nominated for a Georgian Group Architectural Award

5 August 2008

Pittville PlacePittville Place, Pittville Park, Cheltenham, developed by Broadway Heritage plc, has been nominated for 2 prestigious Georgian Group Architectural awards. The Georgian Group is a national charity dedicated to the conservation and preservation of Georgian buildings, parks and gardens.

The Pittville Place development comprises two Regency-style buildings each offering eight elegant new apartments set in landscaped gardens, with ‘seamless’ views over the neighbouring Grade II-Listed Pittville Park.

Cirencester-based architects The Arbuthnott Ladenburg Partnership obtained planning consents. The London-based practice of Stiff and Trevillion then undertook detailed design work and oversaw implementation for Broadway Heritage. The nominations are for: ‘New Building in the Classical Tradition’ and ‘The Giles Worsley Award for a New Building in a Georgian Context’. Construction of Pittville Place took just over eighteen months and handover took place in July 2008.

Michael Hodges is MD of Broadway Heritage: “In formulating the original scheme and obtaining consent for the then owners of the site, Gloucestershire County Council, the architects took very great care to propose a scheme which respected the general layout of the original Pittville Estate. You could say that Pittville Place is the fulfillment of the dream of Joseph Pitt of 200 years ago, for Regency park-side villas. We have combined Regency-styling with high thermal and acoustic insulation, solar heating, low maintenance costs and designer interiors. It’s an ambitious development on a scale of which Joseph Pitt would surely have approved.

“For our building designs we drew architectural inspiration from the Regency period – the transitional time when fashion was shifting from Georgian purity to Victorian grandeur,” says Andy Trevillion of Stiff and Trevillion. “The period was characterised by ‘stripped’ classicism championed by the likes of Sir John Soane and Sir John Nash. Indeed, Pittville Place’s neighbour, the Pittville Pump Room was designed by Sir John Forbes in this tradition. In the stripped classicism at Pittville Place we utilised simple geometric forms and modern materials to successfully create contemporary living accommodation. The development is really shown off to its best, of course, in the mature romantic parkland setting.”

Blending seemingly effortlessly with that parkland setting are the gardens at Pittville Place.

“With the gardens we’ve created an elegant refined setting for the buildings and in three principle styles,” says Martin Portus, Partner of landscape architects, Whitton Associates. “In areas adjacent to existing trees, the planting has been designed to form a tranquil woodland ground cover. The pattern of plants is arranged in broad sweeps to reflect this more naturalistic character. On the roof garden, we’ve taken a more formal approach with parterre raised beds. We’ve used more colourful, sun-loving plants such as roses and lavender here as well. The west-facing garden responds positively to its prominent role adjacent to Pittville Park. Here we’ve opted for box hedging and pencil-thin specimen conifers to recreate the spirit and style of the original historic landscape vision. We are sure that this garden will be seen and enjoyed by the many visitors to the Park in years to come.”
